About EAA Chapter 179

Chartered in Albuquerque N.M. on August 29, 1963. Incorporated in the State of New Mexico in July, 1965. Has been in continuous operation to the present day. We celebrated our Golden Anniversary in August 2013 at the Sandia Resort and Casino. We invited chapter founders as special guests including Earl Cummings, Bill Caldwell, Bill Guernsey, Jerry Longmire, David Mick, and Jim Stark. It was a fun evening packed with friends, great food and drink, and aviation stories to commemorate this important chapter milestone.

EAA Chapter 179 Awarded National “Gold Chapter” Recognition

Chapter 179 has been recognized by the National EAA organization as a Gold Chapter in 2019, having demonstrated outstanding commitment to general aviation. This recognition places our Chapter in the top 98 percentile for chapters worldwide. To merit this recognition, the Chapter has met 9 of the following 10 criteria:

    1. Attended a chapter leadership training session
    2. Growing or steady membership
    3. Offers IMC or VMC club programs
    4. Participates in Young Eagles or Flying Start programs
    5. Has an EAA-approved flight advisor or technical counselor
    6. Participates in EAA’s annual chapter member survey
    7. Reads EAA ChapterGram regularly
    8. Requested EAA promotional materials or ChapterBlast email
    9. Hosts at least two public events each year
    10. Owns/leases a facility – this is the one criteria that the Chapter doesn’t meet

This designation recognizes the commitment of our members to organizing or sponsoring activities that educate the public about general aviation and that open doors for people to become involved in aviation. We work to engage adults and especially youth, to introduce them to opportunities to become a pilot, to build an airplane, to pursue a career in an aviation related field, or to participate in other aviation activities. This can be for recreation or for pursuing career goals. Our members also provide continuing support such as our scholarships for aviation related education, our summer program for youth, other programs in the list above, and simply sharing experience and expertise.

We’re proud of our accomplishment and of this recognition as a Gold Chapter. If you would care to join us, check out our Membership Information. New members are always welcome.
