Copy of Chapter 179 Aviation Scholarships

 Applications for 2026 Scholarships: January 2 – Feb 15, 2026

Albuquerque Chapter 179 of the Experimental Aircraft Association awards scholarships annually to candidates pursuing aviation education as a career or hobby including flight training, A&P certification, or other activities for applicants’` intent on entering an aviation-related occupation. The amount and number of grants are determined each year and contingent on available funding. Recipients will be notified and awarded at our March Chapter Gathering.

For the first time ever, our scholarships will be open to adults over the age of 25 years old. So, no matter your age or goals in aviation, you can apply to our scholarship. The starting age to apply is 15 years old. The application is the same for both scholarships.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be older than 15 years of age and a resident of New Mexico.
  • Describe your interest in aviation and your future. Include your aviation goal(s), how much ($) you are requesting, specific justification for how it will be spent, any connections to EAA Chapter 179, any aviation experience and achievements, and how you will give back to the community after reaching your goals.
  • Provide a copy of an unofficial school transcript (unless you’ve been out of formal education for more than 5 years).
  • Provide at least one reference letter (no more than three) from someone other than a family member who is familiar with your motivation, ability, and potential regarding aviation.
  • Scholarship amounts will vary.

To apply, proceed to the Application Form

Application tips:

  • Show us your dedication! Start your flight training/education journey NOW. Having completed ground school or FAA Written Exam will make your application stand out.
  • Get involved! Check out other areas of our website to find out when our monthly meetings and other activities are and join us.
  • Be very specific and thorough with your application, and answer all of the questions fully. Don’t leave us with questions or wanting more.
  • Have a plan. No matter if your goals are professional or for hobby, we need to know how you plan to get there.
  • Send eMail to scholarships@eaa179.org with any questions.

An important criteria is the applicant’s commitment to pursuing aviation. An application that describes personal accomplishments or work-in-progress assist the committee selection. For example, for those with a goal of becoming a pilot, EAA offers a guide for attaining a pilot certificate (“Pilot Training Steps“); progress on such activities may demonstrate commitment. Scholarship funds cannot be used for general studies and school expenses. Funds are paid directly to the school or instructor.  Examples of how these funds may be used:

  • Working toward certification including CFI fees, aircraft rental, and tuition
  • FAA testing fees
  • FAA textbooks, online and printed study guides, and other material related to the recipient’s scholarship endeavors

EAA Chapter 179 IMC Club

Sharpen your Instrument  Flying Skills!

The chapter IMC Club meets the 3rd Saturday of each month, 0930-1100 at Double Eagle II Airport, still a hybrid session (in person or remote).  Anyone is welcome!

IMC Club sessions provide an open discussion based on instrument flying scenarios.  Discussions provide a good review of essentials for IMC flight plus a fun way to meet and learn from other instrument pilots. Here is the description from the monthly IMC announcement from EAA:

EAA’s IMC Club provides organized “hangar flying” focused on building instrument flying knowledge and skills.  The Club promotes a safety culture through continued education and believes that we develop safety and proficiency through education and real life experience. Monthly meetings offer an opportunity to share in-flight experiences and valuable safety tips.

Meetings typically focus on a scenario “you were flying along and then this happened – what do you do”. Here is an example from a recent meeting:

You take off from a non-towered airport, without any controller frequency in range. You have an IFR flight plan on file but not activated. You climb into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) at a much lower altitude than expected. — NOW what do you do.

After the dealing with the scenario, a quiz is presented that can deal with regulations, the approach charts, the enroute charts, weather, and other facets of flying IFR. So if you are interested in learning more about IFR flight or simply wish to participate in problem solving, you are invited to attend or tune in via ZOOM to this and future meetings.

How to participate:

  • In-person in the Bode Aviation conference room, 2nd floor, next to the café.  Meet up at the café prior for breakfast or after for lunch.
  • OR Join Remotely: Visit the Site Search page for Events at KAEG. The meeting announcement will be listed when it has been registered with FAA. Select the upcoming IMC Club Meeting for Event Details; the ZOOM link will be included.

To receive FAA WINGS credit, select the “Register” link on the Events Pate (you must be logged in to your FAAST account).

Annual Corporate sponsorships offer visibility and advertising options for your organization through our monthly newsletter, website and public events (Young Eagles, DEAA, LOEFI, etc.) as follows:Corporate Sponsor Levels

EAA Chapter 179 relies on membership dues, individual donations, and corporate sponsorships to fund our educational activities including our aviation scholarship program, the Land of Enchantment Fly-In (LOEFI), Young Eagles rallies, aircraft projects, and the Double Eagle Aviation Academy (DEAA).  In 2021, the 179 Board of Directors committed to a long-desired goal to secure a dedicated chapter facility at Double Eagle II Airport.

In 2022, we acquired a workshop hangar to support our aircraft build project and serve as a center of activity on the airport. While a terrific asset to support builder focused activities of our chapter, our long term vision remains: to secure a larger aviation education center to base our activities, enabling us to expand our offerings in support of the aviation community.
