EAA Advanced Air Academy Scholarships

EAA Chapter 179 supports a full tuition scholarship to attend the EAA Advanced Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. If you are interested in any of EAA’s Air Academies, let us know at scholarships@eaa179.org.

The weeklong Air Academy provides an atmosphere for mature students to become totally immersed in the world of flight while housed at the EAA’s Air Academy Lodge. Ground instruction and introductory recreation flight experiences highlight this meaningful, action-packed week. It combines “in-the-air” and “on-the-ground” hands-on activities. Attendees also have an opportunity to experience EAA’s AirVenture.

An important criterion is the applicant’s commitment to pursuing aviation. An application that describes personal accomplishments or work-in-progress assist the committee selection. For example, for those with a goal of becoming a pilot, EAA offers a guide for attaining a pilot certificate (“Pilot Training Steps“); progress on such activities may demonstrate commitment.

NOTE:  Additional Air Academies are conducted all summer in Oshkosh for various age groups (Young Eagles, Basic, and Advanced) and one can apply directly for EAA national scholarships.  All the details at:  EAA Air Academy.

APPLY BY Feb 15:   If you are age 16, 17, or 18 and interested in attending EAA Advanced Air Academy, apply for the EAA 179 Chapter Scholarship and indicate “tuition for the EAA Air Academy” for your intended use of funds. Recipient is responsible for providing transportation to Oshkosh and return. Assistance to cover travel may be available via separate scholarship application to EAA HQ.

Historical records of EAA Chapter 179

About EAA Chapter 179

Chartered in Albuquerque N.M. on August 29, 1963. Incorporated in the State of New Mexico in July, 1965. Has been in continuous operation to the present day. We celebrated our Golden Anniversary in August 2013 at the Sandia Resort and Casino. We invited chapter founders as special guests including Earl Cummings, Bill Caldwell, Bill Guernsey, Jerry Longmire, David Mick, and Jim Stark. It was a fun evening packed with friends, great food and drink, and aviation stories to commemorate this important chapter milestone.

EAA Chapter 179 Awarded National “Gold Chapter” Recognition

Chapter 179 has been recognized by the National EAA organization as a Gold Chapter in 2019, having demonstrated outstanding commitment to general aviation. This recognition places our Chapter in the top 98 percentile for chapters worldwide. To merit this recognition, the Chapter has met 9 of the following 10 criteria:

    1. Attended a chapter leadership training session
    2. Growing or steady membership
    3. Offers IMC or VMC club programs
    4. Participates in Young Eagles or Flying Start programs
    5. Has an EAA-approved flight advisor or technical counselor
    6. Participates in EAA’s annual chapter member survey
    7. Reads EAA ChapterGram regularly
    8. Requested EAA promotional materials or ChapterBlast email
    9. Hosts at least two public events each year
    10. Owns/leases a facility – this is the one criteria that the Chapter doesn’t meet

This designation recognizes the commitment of our members to organizing or sponsoring activities that educate the public about general aviation and that open doors for people to become involved in aviation. We work to engage adults and especially youth, to introduce them to opportunities to become a pilot, to build an airplane, to pursue a career in an aviation related field, or to participate in other aviation activities. This can be for recreation or for pursuing career goals. Our members also provide continuing support such as our scholarships for aviation related education, our summer program for youth, other programs in the list above, and simply sharing experience and expertise.

We’re proud of our accomplishment and of this recognition as a Gold Chapter. If you would care to join us, check out our Membership Information. New members are always welcome.

Tax Exempt Status

The Albuquerque EAA Chapter 179 is a 501c3 tax exempt, charitable organization. Any proceeds from our events go towards aviation scholarships or programs and services which further our mission to share our passion for flying, building and restoring recreational aircraft, promoting aviation safety and education, and serving the local aviation community.
